A New Type of Residence Permit in Georgia for IT Professionals
The Association of Georgian Virtual Zone Persons is pleased to share important news: a draft law has been published introducing an entirely new type of residence permit — specifically designed for those working in the field of information technology.
What the Draft Law Proposes
The proposed changes amend the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons. For the first time, Georgia is offering a dedicated legal channel for IT professionals to obtain a temporary residence permit — whether as labor migrants, individual entrepreneurs, or representatives of international companies.
Who Is Eligible for the New Georgian Residence Permit
The new residence permit is intended for:
Employees and executives of international IT companies operating in Georgia;
Foreign nationals registered as individual entrepreneurs (IE) with small business status and engaged in IT activities;
Labor migrants officially registered with the Ministry of Health of Georgia as IT specialists;
Family members of the above.
Why This Residence Permit Matters for IT Professionals
This draft law is a major step toward simplifying relocation for qualified specialists and international tech companies. It’s especially relevant for those who:
Work remotely;
Are seeking a stable jurisdiction with a flexible tax regime;
Reside in countries with limited access to the EU, U.S., or other regions.
By obtaining Georgian residency, IT professionals can legally live, work, and travel within the country, as well as gain access to financial and corporate services that may not be available in their home jurisdictions.
For companies with Virtual Zone status, this creates new opportunities:
Easier recruitment of international developers;
A streamlined path to team expansion;
Seamless integration of global partners without changing jurisdictions.
