Grant Thornton Georgia and EBA Event: New Personal Data Protection Law in Georgia
Grant Thornton Georgia and the EBA (European Business Association) hosted a Public-Private dialogue about the new legal regulation on personal data protection in Georgia. This event focused on the recently adopted Law of Georgia on Personal Data Protection, which came into effect on March 1, 2024.
The chairman, Shorena Kopaleishvili of the Association of Georgian Virtual Zone Persons attended the event.
The Georgian Parliament passed a new law on personal data protection, aiming to align with EU standards and enhance data subject rights. It defines data processing broadly, encompassing the collection, storage, sharing, and erasure of personal data. All organizations handling personal data must comply with the new law’s requirements. IT companies likely process personal data, making understanding and adhering to this regulation crucial. The new law represents a significant step towards harmonizing Georgian data protection regulations with EU standards.
Participants: John Braeckevelt, the president of the European Business Association; Paata Shurgaia, Co-Managing Partner, Grant Thornton; Nino Jolia, Head of the Legal Department of Grant Thornton; Nino Kvelaidze, lawyer, Grant Thornton; Kakhaber Goshadze, Leading Specialist of the Human Rights Protection and Civil Integration Committee of the Parliament of Georgia; Shavleg Todua, Head of the Legal Department of the Personal Data Protection Service; and representatives of the business sector.
The event culminated in an engaging Q&A session, offering participants the opportunity to seek clarifications directly from the representatives of state structures. Notably, IT professionals had the chance to channel their inquiries during the event through the Association of Georgian Virtual Zone Persons’ Telegram channel, with Shorena Kopaleishvili lending her voice to their questions during the meeting. We would like to thank the organizers for this important and interesting PPD.
